1920s Art Deco Sunburst Mantel

This late 1920s Art Deco fireplace mantel features a recessed frieze with alternating light and medium oak fan sections forming a sunburst design made from highly figured English Oak

The top of the frieze is stepped to follow the fan pattern. The fireplace opening is framed with diamond cut beading, above which is an ample (6 inch deep) shelf with an ogee moulded front. The mantel has plain block feet and block tops to the legs.

1920s Art Deco Mantel in Walnut

This mantel was designed at the height of the Art Deco movement taking the stepped pyramids of Central America as its inspiration.

Made from finely grained walnut throughout the frieze has a double step down from the top of the legs and a double step back to a slender central shelf highlighted by a horizontal carved strip underneath. The backing of the shelf is raised, also by a double step, with a double stepped, moulded, top edge.

The clean lines and subtle combinations of simple geometries could belong to a modern
apartment as much as to its original, flat topped, Art Deco home.

A simple Art Deco mantel design, realised in beautiful, solid oak

This mantel has many subtle features. The plain legs rise from wrap round block feet to support a gently bowed top shelf edged with greek key moulding.

A recessed mantel frieze mirrors the curve of the top and provides for a narrow central shelf with a double ribbed edge.

Beneath the mantel shelf, across the top of the opening, is another band of greek key moulding.

1930s Bowed Frieze Mahogany Mantel with Ebony Stringing

A most impressive Art Deco Fire Surround in flame mahogany with rectangular ebonised stringing details.

The caddy style top is gently bowed across most of the width. At either end is a concave curve that continues all the way down the legs where chamfered foot blocks follow the profile. Each curved panel has ebonised stringing features filled with fiddleback mahogany as a contrast to the broader expanses of flame pattern.

With a massive 6 inch rebate, this surround is ideally suited to a recessed insert such as the Palmer.

1920s Oak Art Deco Mantel

A 1920's oak mantel with a raised central frieze and octagonal boss made from beautifully figured oak.

This mantel exhibits it's Art Deco inspiration through its varied geometric details. The rib around the set back fire opening is doubled around the corners giving a subtle double underline to either side of the frieze.

The top of the frieze is double stepped - initially with a chamfer and then a central vertical step. Either side of the raised central portion is a descending set of 5 ribs and there is a central raised octagonal boss.

1920s Art Deco Walnut Mantel

An unusual walnut mantel with three lobed shelf and burr walnut frieze.

The striking feature of this Art Deco mantel is the profile of the top shelf with three demi-lune overhangs supported by symmetrical bolection mouldings mounted on the beautifully figured and book-matched burr walnut frieze.

The legs have a subtle step back to both sides and at the top of the piece where they form raised corner blocks in an echo of the stepped forward block feet. The opening is also stepped back and framed with a simple three piece fillet.

1930s Art Deco Mahogany and Walnut Mantel

A large 1930s Art Deco fire surround with drop shoulders. This unusual design is made from two complementary dark woods, Mahogany and Walnut. It has beading around the inner and outer legs. The feet are block set and drop back from the main body.

1930s Oak Mantel

A mantel with Art Deco styling made from finely figured oak. It features a central curved recess at the bottom of which is a protruding shelf with Odeon Style curved ends. It has block feet and moulding to the fireplace opening.

The overall shape combined with the Art Deco detailing gives a classic 1930s look. It was removed from a property in Montrose Avenue, Woodsmoor in Stockport.

Late 1920s Walnut Art Deco Mantel

A fantastic walnut Art Deco mantel from
the late 1920s with a beautiful inset burr
walnut panel above the straight shelf.
There is fluted detail under the shelf
and moulding all around the edges.
The opening is stepped out under the
shelf to give a 6" rebate meaning that
the mantel can accomodate the
deepest of inserts.

It still has the original socket for an
electric clock.

1930s Mahogany Art Deco Fireplace Mantel

A tall mahogany mantel dated February 17th 1931
which was removed from a 1930s semi on Yew Tree
Lane in Manchester. It has a large central bevelled
mirror with a shaped top. The sides of the mantel
are concave finely figured veneer panels mounted
on a deep wide serpentine shelf that spans the frieze.
The frieze has fine diamond moulding across the top under
the shelf and bullnose moulding to the bottom.
Both the plain legs on moulded block feet have
vertical grain in the rich warm mahogany.

Fireplace Mantel c 1933 in contrasting vertical
and horizontal grained walnut. It has no feet
and has plain moulding. It has drop shoulders
and a central well above a chunky stepped shelf.
It has nicely tooled moulding to the inside of
the Fireplace opening which end in large block
feet with vertical grain.

The quality of this Fireplace Mantel cannot be overemphasised.
It would suit an original Art Deco Fireplace or a
reproduction tiled back panel and hearth.

1930s Mahogany Art Deco Fireplace Mantel

An original early 1930s Art Deco Fireplace Mantel removed
from a house in South London. It has a high deco
starburst fan radiating from a central block.
Elevated castellations with diminishing blocks
running down. It has an extraordinary double shelf
stepping back to the legs. The block feet have
radiating folds ascending to the top of the opening.
It would suit a windermere or other tiled fan
Fireplace inserts.

This Fireplace Mantel is now available as a reproduction
in a number of woods
